General information about the country: Italy is located in the Mediterranean basin, occupies the Apennine Peninsula, the islands of Sicily, Sardinia and a number of small islands. Its shores are washed in the west by the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas, in the south by the Ionian and in the east by the Adriatic Seas. The area of the territory is 301.3 thousand km2. It borders Slovenia in the northeast (232 km long), Austria (430 km) and Switzerland (744 km) in the north, and France (515 km) in the northwest. The total length of the land borders is 1,932 km. The time zone is UTC+1.
